BAD RELIGION – No Substance LP

Released in 1998, No Substance occupies a unique place in BAD RELIGION's discography. Two years after The Gray Race, the band continued without Brett Gurewitz and delivered a record that was more melodic and occasionally more restrained, while still driven by Greg Graffin's instantly recognizable voice and the trademark vocal harmonies that have always been such an important part of the band's sound.
From « Hear It », however, BAD RELIGION immediately shows its efficiency: driving rhythms, catchy melodies and choruses that stick in your head. « Shades Of Truth » slows things down before tracks such as « All Fantastic Images », « The Biggest Killer In American History » and « Sowing The Seeds Of Utopia » bring the band back towards a faster and more direct punk rock sound.
The title track « No Substance » perfectly captures the atmosphere of the album, with an instantly memorable chorus and the band's ever-critical view of society. « Raise Your Voice », featuring Campino from DIE TOTEN HOSEN, delivers one of the album's most anthemic moments, while « The Hippy Killers », « Mediocre Minds » and « At The Mercy Of Imbeciles » prove that BAD RELIGION had lost none of their bite.
Often overshadowed by classics such as Suffer, No Control or Against The Grain, No Substance definitely deserves another listen. It's a transitional record, more varied and sometimes more accessible, but everything that defines BAD RELIGION is still here: irresistible melodies, intelligent lyrics, sharp guitars and perfectly crafted vocal harmonies. Perhaps an underrated album, but one packed with some seriously great songs!
