Released in 1985, Horror Epics is the fourth studio album by THE EXPLOITED. Following Let’s Start A War..., the Scottish band continued their path with a darker and heavier record while retaining the raw energy and aggression that made them one of the defining bands of the UK82 punk scene.
The title track « Horror Epics » opens the album with a particularly menacing atmosphere before « Don’t Forget The Chaos » and « Law And Order » bring THE EXPLOITED back to direct, furious and uncompromising punk. Clocking in at under two minutes, « I Hate You » perfectly sums up the band's effectiveness: a handful of chords, pounding rhythms and Wattie Buchan's snarling vocals.
« No More Idols », « Maggie » and « Dangerous Visions » also reveal a darker side of the band, with songs that are sometimes longer and heavier than those found on their earlier records. But the spirit remains intact: abrasive guitars, massive bass, primitive drums and choruses shouted like slogans. « Down Below » and « Treat You Like Shit » continue in the same direction with all the brutality that defines THE EXPLOITED.
Darker and heavier than the band's early classics, Horror Epics represents an important step in the evolution of THE EXPLOITED. Their sound was beginning to get harder without yet fully embracing the crossover and metal influences that would become more obvious later on. A rough, aggressive and unmistakably British record that has become a true UK82 classic over the years.
