REVIEW
Back to 1994 with the debut album from Swedish punk rockers MILLENCOLIN! Originally released as "Tiny Tunes" on BURNING HEART RECORDS and later renamed "Same Old Tunes", this record marks the beginning of a band that would soon become one of the leading names in European skate punk. At this early stage, Nikola Sarcevic and his bandmates deliver fast, melodic and incredibly refreshing punk rock, heavily influenced by ska and American melodic hardcore.
From the opening track "Mr. Clean", the formula is already in place: energetic guitars, bouncing bass lines, driving drums and instantly catchy choruses. Songs such as "Chiquita Chaser", "Da Strike", "Dance Craze" and "The Einstein Crew" demonstrate the band's early talent for writing short, effective and ridiculously enjoyable punk rock songs. The ska sections add an extra touch of fun, while the faster moments recall the glory days of NOFX, LAGWAGON and NO USE FOR A NAME.
Less polished than their later releases, "Same Old Tunes" nevertheless has an irresistible charm. The production remains relatively raw, the songs are bursting with energy and the whole record perfectly captures the carefree spirit of 1990s skate punk. It's still a long way from the more mature sound of "Pennybridge Pioneers", but all the ingredients that would make MILLENCOLIN so successful are already here. A fantastic debut album, packed with melodies, speed and infectious enthusiasm! Essential listening for fans of old-school melodic skate punk.
