CHAIN CULT - Shallow Grave Lp

Released in 2019 on La Vida Es Un Mus, Shallow Grave is the debut album from Athens trio CHAIN CULT. Following a demo and the excellent Isolated EP, the band steps up to LP format with eight tracks of dark, tense post-punk firmly rooted in a punk attitude.
From « The Uninvited », CHAIN CULT immediately establishes its own atmosphere: prominent bass lines, tight and nervous drums, cold melodic guitars and raw vocals. « End Of Days » and the excellent title track « Shallow Grave » continue in the same direction, somewhere between post-punk, dark punk and deathrock, with choruses catchy enough to stick in your head immediately.
« Witch Hunt », « A Distant Echo » and « Under The Gun » perfectly demonstrate the band's strength: a dark and melancholic atmosphere without ever sacrificing energy. At times you can hear echoes of THE SOUND, early THE CURE, WIPERS or BLITZ during their Second Empire Justice period, but CHAIN CULT already has a strong identity of its own, rawer and firmly connected to the DIY punk scene.
With only eight tracks, Shallow Grave never overstays its welcome. « Traffic » and the superb « City Of Ruins » close a compact, dark and incredibly effective record. Haunting bass lines, icy guitars, irresistible melodies and a constant sense of urgency prevent the album from ever slipping into overly polished or contemplative post-punk. An excellent debut LP and a perfect introduction to the world of CHAIN CULT.
