Off to Madrid with GOLPE DE GRACIA and "Heriotzari Irri", released by TOUGH AIN'T ENOUGH and PRIMATOR CREW. Forget polished Oi! with stadium-sized singalongs. This band operates in much rougher territory, somewhere between street punk and hardcore. There's no attempt to smooth out the edges, and that's exactly what makes them worth checking out.
The guitars are thick and abrasive, the rhythm section hits hard, and the vocals have the kind of aggression that separates a genuinely angry band from one that's merely loud. There's plenty of classic Spanish Oi! attitude here, but also a hardcore punk urgency that keeps things moving. No pointless technical displays or unnecessary arrangements: the songs get straight to the point, driven by sharp riffs and a constant sense of tension. The use of both Basque and Spanish also gives the record a character of its own.
What I particularly like about GOLPE DE GRACIA is the way they hold on to the spirit of Oi! without falling into the usual clichés. They favour anger and rough edges over easy melodies. "Heriotzari Irri" should appeal just as much to fans of aggressive street punk as to hardcore listeners who appreciate a healthy dose of Oi! in their music. No frills, no unnecessary nonsense, just a record worth hearing if you like your street punk played with conviction.
