Released in 1982 on Clay Records, City Baby Attacked By Rats is the debut album by G.B.H. and one of the essential records of the UK82 movement. From the opening seconds, the Birmingham band delivers fast, aggressive and uncompromising hardcore punk, driven by Colin Abrahall's furious vocals, Jock Blyth's cutting guitars and a rhythm section running at full speed.
« Time Bomb » starts the attack before the essential « Sick Boy », one of the band's absolute classics. « Wardogs », « Maniac », « Gunned Down » and « I Am The Hunted » follow with relentless urgency: simple and effective riffs, pounding drums, powerful bass and choruses made to be shouted along to.
The second half of the record never lets up, with the title track « City Baby Attacked By Rats », « Prayer Of A Realist », « Passenger On The Menu » and « Heavy Discipline ». The sound is raw but already incredibly effective, with an energy that places G.B.H. somewhere between late-'70s British punk and the much faster hardcore that would explode throughout the 1980s.
With its 13 tracks, City Baby Attacked By Rats has become a true British punk classic. Fast, wild, catchy and packed with essential songs, it perfectly captures the spirit of early G.B.H.. A landmark UK82 album and an indispensable record for any hardcore punk collection.
